I am currently using Serato DJ with an SL2 box and my Vextax turntables.
Generally I wasn’t that impressed with Serato; yes it was great to have all my music on my macbook and just use the timecoded vinyl to control it etc… but generally I found its stability and reliability a little bit weak, and would lose signal on the box sometimes and just give of a wet fart sound through the speakers, or the software would freeze etc… plus apart from general mixing and the loops feature I didn’t really see there being much else you could do with it.
So I have decided to sell my old set up and upgrade to a pioneer DDJ SX2 so I can take advantage of more of Seratos features, plus the touch pads on the SX2 look like fun!
HOWEVER……
While browsing around I came across the Traktor S8… and WOW, I was impressed!
The unit just looks amazing and the reviews are awesome! It just looks like it will be a lot of fun to play with and the remix decks are extremely appealing and stability wise I’ve heard good reviews from Traktor.
But… and it is a big BUT! There are no jog wheels or pitch faders… So how the hell are you supposed to beat match tracks you haven’t set the beat grid up for? I mean I’m new to the digital DJ world and have always had to beat match tracks before mixing them, but I have over 50,000 tracks on my laptop so to sit down and set up beat grids for all of them is a bit daunting. I never used the sync feature on Serato as I found it unreliable so I preffered the reassurance of traditional beat matching tracks instead of relying on the software.
I want to know if anyone has used one and tried to beat match on it using the touch strips and the tempo dial?
I’m really torn between them as I am pushing towards it but not being able to beat match in an emergency when the grids aren’t right is putting me off and pushing me towards the DDJ SX2 and sticking with Serato. I’ve looked at the Traktor S4 but it looks pretty basic compared to the Pioneer SX2 and if I’m going to spend all this money on a controller I want the best I can afford. Ideally I would get the S8 and then buy CDJ’s or an equivelant to use for the jog wheels etc… but I’m not that rich and the wife won’t let me get the finance on £3k’s worth of kit lol.
Any advice from anyone would be welcomed!!
Thanks
Hey, I`m currently going thru the same problem, having a hard time deciding because of financial capabilities at the moment.
Good luck with your findings. Also, do keep updates, I wanna make a full comparison before getting anything!,
also, how bout that pioneer XDJ-RX? thoughts?
Simple, Traktor is good at one thing in particular, tight EDM tracks. Rocksteady beats throughout the track. It gets the sync right most of the time. So, with all those FX and remix decks to play with, they figure you have plenty to do without keeping your decks in sync. You let Traktos sync it all for you and keep yourself busy with all the live remixes, mashups and what have you.
So, if you are purely in electronic dance music, Traktor might be for you. Otherwise, Serato, which you already have and know, might be the best choice still.
Using Serato with a controller will open a host of options that your DVS system didn’t offer you. Not sure how much extra features you’d be getting from a Traktor setup vs a Serato one (especially with flip now).As for the RX. If you come from CDJs and you are a RekordBox-centric DJ already, this would be a good unit to practice at home without buying a 5k+ club setup. Then you can take your memory stick to the club and play on. The thing being that you have as much (or rather AS LITTLE) by way of features as you would on a 2000 NXS / 900 setup. If you are a DJ software DJ already, my guess is that you WILL find the RX lacking in many respects.
Just my two cents, as usual
And the kicker is: You have to decide in Rekordbox if you want to export and setup for the RX or CDJ Nexus. So your stick will not be compatible… that is the latest 😉
Hi Everyone , This is my first time commenting on the site. I own the pioneer ddj sz controller and I am having a technical challenge with it . the third and fourth channel always shows “thru” anytime I load any track in it with I am unable to hear the music I am playing in the channels once it shows “thru” . please any advice on what could go wrong . Thanks
While I don’t personally know the SZ very well, thru usually is an indication that (in a DVS setup) the actual sound of the vinyl is sent to the channel, rather than the timecode signal is used by the software. This is so you can use both timecode to control your DJ software decks and play regular vinyls without re-plugging stuff.
So my thoughts are this is where you should look for the answer.
Your SZ has small switches at the top of the channel faders. For channels 3 and 4 the options are Line/Phono/USB. Line is the setting if you have anything else (like CDJs) connected to the SZ. Phono is when you hook up a Turntable and want to play regular vinyls. USB is when you want to use the channel either for regular 3rd and 4th deck operation (which is then either controlled by control vinyl on a TT or by the controller deck (switch deck 1/3 or 2/4). There is a place in settings (audio tab I think) where you can set if you are using turntables at all and what to do with timecode signal. If you are not using TTs, this should be switched off I think.
Again, this is based on manual and experience with other DVS setups, so hope it helps.
I doubt most of our Serato using readers will agree with you there. Especially with Flip now on the table. I doubt my dear fellow moderator would appreciate his performances qualified as being done with a “traditional record box in a laptop with a built-in sampler” either.
However, we do support anybody in his/her very personal choice and if that is what you think will work for you, more power to you.
Good luck!
Hi Sean, no problem. We are a (we think) very reader-friendly place and want to keep it that way. I am sure you were well intended and not trying to be offensive. However, your statement could considered somewhat offensive by Serato users.
We generally try to stay away from any kind of this or that IS better statements. No harm, no foul. Just better that I react to it now, rather than having to squelch a discussion later on.
As I said, we will always support people in what is essentially a very personal decision. Good luck with your choice.
I do believe I saw one or two comments on it, but not sure by who.
That are old stories you read.
Serato now has Serato Flip, while it is a rather different take than for example Traktor’s remix decks, I find it very cool.
Actually it is more DJ like. In Traktor’s Remix decks you have to prepare the remix set you want to use and load it into the decks to have it ready when you push the buttons. With Serato Flip you can slice up and remix your song totally on the fly and that is really awesome. It is much like a slicer on steroids.
Speaking of slicer that is an awesome remix tool too, look at the forum video (sticky thread at the top of this forum) and check out my performance pad video.
Same goes for effect racks and stacking effects they are now IMHO up to bar with Serato now actually having iZotope studio quality effects. So while Traktor has been quite on the standstill since the introduction of remix decks, Serato has not copied Traktor in that regard, but they have made their own thing and I find it actually pretty amazing what they did and find it very much “thinking like a DJ”. Because honestly if I want to DJ with remix decks, Ableton Live actually does a better job than Traktor and needs less prep work.
With Serato you can now live remix without much prep work (you should know the song very well though to pull it off).So that black and white world you describe does not exist anymore in my book. As Serato did heavy innovating the last year while Traktor pretty much stood still.
Indeed, there is a lot depending on your personal workflow and also about where you want to invest time.
Some people love to prepare their sets to death and sit at home doing edits and cuts to make the perfect remix set. That is just not me for example.
I more like knowing my tunes inside out, learning and experimenting at home a lot with the different possibilities and then try to pull it off live if it sounds good. That is why Serato is for me, which does not mean that Traktor is bad, they just cater to different people.
